Former Russia international Andrey Arshavin has opened up about his memories of representing his country, describing the moment when a giant Russian flag was unfurled across the stadium during a match against England as the most unforgettable experience in football.
Speaking at the “Znanie” forum, the former Zenit Saint Petersburg star said: “When you play for the Russian national team, under your own flag… I remember the match against England, when the whole stadium was covered with a huge Russian flag — that’s the best feeling in football. That’s what stays with you.”
Arshavin also addressed the captain’s armband, noting that while it carried symbolic status, it did not change anything internally for him. “When I wore the captain’s armband for Russia, I didn’t feel anything extra. I’ve always been a captain in life, a leader in every team. The armband is a status — how people see you. But inside, nothing changed. Life just made me a leader.”
The 44-year-old enjoyed a distinguished international career, earning 75 caps for Russia, scoring 17 goals and providing 22 assists. He played for top clubs including Zenit, Arsenal, Kuban Krasnodar, and Kairat, and was a key part of the Russian side that won bronze at Euro 2008.
Arshavin is also a UEFA Cup winner and a three-time Russian Premier League champion with Zenit. Since January 2022, he has served as Deputy General Director for Sports Development at Zenit, overseeing youth football, the Zenit Academy, and the transition of academy graduates to the first team.
