Uruguay’s Silva claimed a historic victory on Stage 2 of the Giro d’Italia, out-sprinting a reduced bunch in a dramatic finish in Veliko Tarnovo. The stage, which started in Burgas, saw intense action with Jonas Vingegaard animating the race on the final climbs, but it was Silva who took the win and the overall leader’s maglia rosa.

The finale was chaotic as the three leaders were caught just 300 meters from the line, setting up a group sprint where the Uruguayan proved fastest. In the battle for the top step, Silva’s triumph marks the first ever Giro stage win for Uruguay.
Vingegaard was aggressive on the final ascent, launching attacks that split the peloton, but he was unable to hold off the fast finishers. The Dane was joined by Pellizzari and Van Eetvelt in a select group before being reeled in just before the finish.
Spanish riders Enric Mas and Markel Beloki finished safely in the main group, salvaging a good day despite the high pace.
The stage was marred by a massive crash with 23 kilometers to go, involving around 20 riders. Among those affected were general classification contenders Santiago Buitrago and Derek Gee. More seriously, Adam Yates suffered a bloodied face and looked heavily shaken, while Jay Vine was forced to abandon – a major blow for UAE Team Emirates.
The race was briefly neutralized as medics attended to the fallen riders. After the restart, Egan Bernal claimed the 6-second bonus at the Red Bull Kilometer, before Vingegaard’s Visma team ramped up the pressure on the climb to the monastery.
Silva’s victory not only gives him the stage but also the overall lead, setting up an exciting battle for the coming stages. The second stage of the Giro delivered drama, history, and a new front-runner in the pink jersey.
